Deutsche Lufthansa AG (FWB: LHA), better known as Lufthansa, is Germany's national carrier and Europe's largest airline group, which also includes major airlines such as Swiss International Airlines and Austrian Airlines.

In total Lufthansa operates flights in 78 countries to more than two hundred destinations worldwide. The airline's entire fleet, including its subsidiary carriers, consists of around 620 aircraft and its total passenger traffic was 104.5 million according to 2013, making Deutsche Lufthansa AG one of the largest airlines in the world.

Lufthansa is also a co-founder of the world's oldest and largest airline alliance, Star Alliance, which was established in 1997.

Its headquarters are located in the German city of Frankfurt am Main, previously located in Cologne, while the airline has its main technical and transport bases at Frankfurt and Munich airports, as well as at Düsseldorf airport, from where Lufthansa is gradually transferring the bulk of its flights to its low-cost airline division, Germanwings.

Until 1994, Lufthansa was a state-owned enterprise. In 1997, the company was taken over entirely by investors including Deutsche Postbank, Deutsche Bank and MGL Gesellschaft fuer Luftverkehrwerte.
